New Jersey Student Learning Assessment

On May 17-20, students in Grade 9 will be administered the state required New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) in Math and ELA. On May 26-27, students in Grade 11 will be administered the NJSLA for Science. Students who miss the initial testing window will be scheduled for a Makeup session on May 24-25 for Grade 9 and June 1-2 for grade 11 following a regular schedule. Students who need to test during the make up window will miss class time to test.

The NJSLA includes content aligned to the grade 09 New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) in ELA, and the NJSLS in Algebra 1 or Geometry. The NJSLA for Science includes content related to the NJSLS for Science grades 9-12. On May 17-20 and May 26-27 the high school will follow an Early Dismissal Schedule for ALL students.

A rotating A/B Day schedule of 4 periods per day will be implemented as follows:

Grade 9 and Grade 11 students should check their Class of 2025 Google Classroom, the posted assignments on the Office of Academics windows or outside the Media Center for their testing room assignments the week of May 8 for grade 9 and beginning May 20 for grade 11.

Students will resume their class meetings following the testing window each day.

Students who are testing are encouraged to be prepared by being well rested and fed, arriving on time, bringing their fully charged school issued chromebook, sharpened pencils, and recreational reading if they complete testing early. Students will not be permitted to work on schoolwork in their testing room. An online calculator is in the testing platform, but students may bring their own hand held calculator if desired. Students may also bring their own wired headphones with a traditional jack for use with their chromebook.

Northern Burlington FFA Plant Sale

The Northern Burlington High School Agricultural Department will be opening up its new greenhouse complex for 3 dates to host its annual NB FFA Spring Plant Sale.

Plant sale dates and times are listed below:

Saturday, May 7th, 2022 9am - 2pm Teacher Appreciation Day
Saturday, May 14th, 2022 9am - 2pm Farmer Appreciation Day
Saturday, May 21st, 2022 9am - 2pm Senior Appreciation Day (55 and older)

Customers may park in the East parking lot and access the greenhouse through the front door to the Greenhouse Complex located directly to the right of the 700 Hallway/East Parking lot door entrance. Please see the attached flyer here.

NB Band Fundraiser

The Band Boosters are hosting a Designer Bag Bingo Night on Saturday, June 4th, to raise money for the Middle School and High School band programs! This Bingo Flyer has all the details!

PTSC

Clothing Drive: The Clothing Drive is Back on for the Spring!! Please use this time to clean out your closets and help out our organization. The Clothing Drive will run from May 9th through May 23rd, with the last drop off being no later than 12 noon on the 23rd. You can drop off your clothing/items at the Pole Barn behind the Middle School. There will be signs up by the 9th of May guiding you to exactly where it is. Here are the items that are accepted/not accepted as well as instructions. Please follow these instructions:

All items must be in sealed black bags. Clothes need to be bagged separately from shoes.
What is accepted: All types of clothing, comforters, quilts, curtains, towels, blankets, sheets, stuffed animals, bikes, and scooters.
Not accepted: Sports equipment, games, puzzles, books, pots, pans, electrical items, glass, cribs, high chairs, vcr tapes, furniture or play sets, car seats, strollers or hard toys.

PTSC and Amazon Smile: The Parent Teacher Student Connection (PTSC) has an Amazon Smile account for any community members who would like to support the PTSC while shopping online. Simply go to http://smile.amazon.com and search for the "Parent Teacher Student Connection" in the list of organizations (it is listed as being in Columbus, NJ) and then go through that portal to do your Amazon shopping. Teacher Appreciation Week

Teacher Appreciation Week was May 2-May 6. School Nurses’ Day is Wednesday, May 11th. Thank you to the PTSC and all of you who took the time to share kindness with our teachers, nurses and staff this week. If you haven’t yet, this would be a perfect time to recognize our teachers/nurses with an encouraging email to express our gratitude for their efforts. Staff emails can be found on our website or via powerschool. Email format is the first letter of their first name followed by their last name @nburlington.com, or you can fill out the form below for each person you would like to recognize and a note will be generated and sent to them: Teacher Appreciation Form

No Place for Hate

No Place for Hate is a student-driven initiative aimed at providing a model for combating intolerance, bullying, and hatred.

Students at NB pledge to try their best to actively speak out against acts of bullying, discrimination, bias, and outright hate.

Dress Code

Please be reminded that there is a dress code. Please review the following with your children and reference page 26 of the student handbook for the following information:

NO sheer clothing
Undergarments may NOT be exposed
Bottoms MUST touch tops
Bottoms MUST cover personal areas

PROM

Charter Bus:

Although it was our intention to offer a charter bus to students who needed transportation to the prom, we are not finding any availability at all. We will keep trying but please do not count on us being able to reserve one. It appears that the bus driver shortage is not just affecting schools.

Tickets:

This year the prom will be held at Lucien’s in Berlin on June 3rd for juniors and seniors. There will be a buffet dinner and a limit of 500 tickets sold for students.

Tickets will be on sale electronically at the following times:

Seniors: May 2 - 6

Juniors: May 9 - 13

SENIORS

Graduation is scheduled for Thursday, June 16th.

Early Dismissal of Students

Please be advised that no student under the age of 18 can sign themselves out from school early even if they are drivers. As per our Board of Education Regulations:

5230 LATE ARRIVAL AND EARLY DISMISSAL

No pupil under the age of eighteen shall be released from school before the end of the school day except in the presence of the pupil's parent(s) or legal guardian(s) or an agent of the parent(s) or legal guardian(s).

Clinical Corner Spotlight:

May is Mental Health Awareness Month - The goal of this month is to break the stigma around mental health and encourage people to seek help. After all, mental health affects us all. Perhaps you’re having trouble focusing or sleeping. Maybe you’re experiencing significant life changes and the stress that comes with it. Maybe it’s difficult to manage your feelings or perhaps you’re avoiding your feelings entirely. Mental health looks different for everyone and these are just a few signs that your mental health may need attention. We highly encourage anyone who needs help to seek help. Here are helpful tips from Mental Health America to get started:

Start with a text. Opening up about your struggles can be difficult and sometimes it’s easier to start with a text to connect with someone you trust. Share what you’re managing and ask if they have the time and capacity to support you.
Use conversation starters. If you’re unsure what to say, click here for a template on how to start the conversation or support a friend in need.
It’s okay to ask for help. There are many resources available. Please click the link to access the list: Mental Health Resources in Burlington County.

Mental Health Awareness Month EVENT - Please see picture below for a free event to be held on Saturday 5/14 at the Partners for Kids and Families, Inc. There will be food, games, and giveaways for Mental Health Awareness month.
Promoting Me, Myself, and I – (DISCONTINUED as of 5/6) An after school self-esteem skill building group for students at Northern that will run during the months of April and May. This group will have an open concept where psychoeducation and skills to build your self-esteem will be the focus. No sign ups will be required initially. Students that want to participate can simply stay after school on those specific days; Tuesdays at the High School and Wednesdays at the Middle School. If they would like to participate in the group every week, they will need to return a signed consent form, which will be provided on the first day of group. Late buses are available (except for Choice students) The following are the group dates and locations:

Tuesday April 5th to Tuesday May 31st at the High School 2:30-3:30pm in room 107. No group on half-days.
Wednesday April 6th to Wednesday June 1st at the Middle School 2:40-3:40pm in room 387. No group on half-days.
