Schedule 24-25

The high school is tentatively planning on an A/B Block Schedule for the following school year.  Students will have four classes daily and a common lunch/opportunity period (two classes before lunch and two classes afterward). School will still begin at 7:20 am and end at 2:28 pm. The plan is to have both grade level and special homerooms for students. Homeroom will not be part of their first-period class. During the lunch/opportunity period, students will have the opportunity to engage in activities as well as eat their lunch. As we are still in the planning stages, your patience is greatly appreciated.

Vaping Survey

Students in some of our G&T classes are learning how to incorporate research into a writing project.  As part of the project, they will be surveying the high school students on vaping.  This survey is voluntary, and no student will be required to participate.  The results of the survey will be used by the students in the class to support their project.  The administration will also use the data to learn about student perceptions, usage and ways that we can best support the current and future needs of our students.  Copy of survey link  https://forms.gle/otJhG3b8Ymeq6ywc6

Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by children who grow up in families whose parents serve in our nation’s armed forces.  The activities we hold throughout the month include having students from military families lead our school in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. We will have tables set up during lunch periods the week of April 15th with snacks and prizes for military students and we will also have a spirit week with themes each day. Please join us in celebrating our military children! Here is the link to the video that we will be sharing in the extended homeroom:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO4ohBQ615Y  “What is friendship to military children?” We also will be showing the following screencastify: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/Xcc7bD8FIB7cPb5qZQvn

Upcoming Assemblies:

April 24:

We will also be hosting Matt Bellace, Ph.D. “How to Get High Naturally”.
This focuses on natural highs, emotional resilience and mental health.  It has been described as the perfect combination of stand-up comedy, interactive demonstrations and inspirational stories.  Matt empowers students to be leaders in their lives and make changes in their environment.  During the program, he also shares his own story of student prevention leadership, as the founder of a nationally recognized student group at Bucknell University.

OUTCOMES
- Understand some basic science behind natural highs, such as running, laughing and helping others.
- Be able to identify their own natural highs and the value of using them to cope with stress.
- Understand the importance of having friends who are alcohol, tobacco and drug free.
- Be able to discuss the effects of vaping, binge drinking and marijuana use on the developing brain.
- Have fun and associate having fun with prevention in high school.

Clinical Corner

School Refusal/Anxiety Part 2

The article on school refusal mentioned in the last Clinical Corner and included at the end here, suggests to first try to understand the issue from your teen’s point of view.  Also, to have them rate each part of the school day to see where they are most uncomfortable.  Helping your child see what they can problem solve about can also help them regain some control over the situation.  No matter what the issue is, the article strongly supports that the child continues going to school as you are trying to resolve the issue.  It builds their confidence and resilience and it will be easier for them to return if they haven’t been out too long.

Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to the school to let them know what is going on.  Teachers and administrators can often brainstorm and help lighten the stress your child is feeling.  Lastly, to get more support for your child and yourself, talking to a counselor can give you both strategies to work on managing all the feelings that your child is experiencing.

The article has more information than I can include here.  To read it in its entirety, click here.
