Month of the Military Child

April is the Month of the Military Child. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by children who grow up in families whose parents serve in our nation’s armed forces.  The activities we hold throughout the month include having students from military families lead our school in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. We will have tables set up during lunch periods the week of April 15th with snacks and prizes for military students and we will also have a spirit week with themes each day. Please join us in celebrating our military children! Here is the link to the video that we will be sharing in the extended homeroom:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VO4ohBQ615Y  “What is friendship to military children?” We also will be showing the following screencastify: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/Xcc7bD8FIB7cPb5qZQvn

Clinical Corner

School Refusal/Anxiety Part 2

The article on school refusal mentioned in the last Clinical Corner and included at the end here, suggests to first try to understand the issue from your teen’s point of view.  Also, to have them rate each part of the school day to see where they are most uncomfortable.  Helping your child see what they can problem solve about can also help them regain some control over the situation.  No matter what the issue is, the article strongly supports that the child continues going to school as you are trying to resolve the issue.  It builds their confidence and resilience and it will be easier for them to return if they haven’t been out too long.

Also, don’t be afraid to reach out to the school to let them know what is going on.  Teachers and administrators can often brainstorm and help lighten the stress your child is feeling.  Lastly, to get more support for your child and yourself, talking to a counselor can give you both strategies to work on managing all the feelings that your child is experiencing.

The article has more information than I can include here.  To read it in its entirety, click here.
