NEW - New Jersey Graduation Performance Assessment for Grade 11

On March 12-15, students in Grade 11 will be administered the New Jersey Graduation Performance Assessment (NJ GPA). Effective for the Class of 2024, the NJ GPA is the primary graduation assessment pathway. Make up testing will occur March 19-22 for students who are absent during the initial testing window following a regular schedule. Students who need to test during the make up window will miss class time to test.

The NJ GPA includes content aligned to the grade 10 New Jersey Student Learning Standards (NJSLS) in ELA, and the NJSLS in Algebra 1 and Geometry. If after completing the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment a student does not demonstrate proficiency on the ELA or mathematics section, the student may retake the New Jersey Graduation Proficiency Assessment in the following summer or fall, or access two additional pathways to meet this graduation requirement. Students must take the NJ GPA at least once to be eligible for additional pathways.

Additional information about the pathways is available at https://www.state.nj.us/education/assessment/requirements/2023_2025.shtml

On March 12-15 the high school will follow an Early Dismissal Schedule for ALL students.

A rotating A/B Day schedule of 4 periods per day will be implemented as follows:

Juniors should check with their Class of 2025 Google Classroom for their testing room assignments on March 6.

Juniors will resume their class meetings following the testing window each day.

Students who are testing are encouraged to be prepared by being well rested and fed, arriving on time, bringing their fully charged school issued chromebook, sharpened pencils, and recreational reading if they complete testing early.  Students will not be permitted to work on schoolwork in their testing room.   An online calculator is in the testing platform, but students may bring their own hand held calculator if desired.  Students may also bring their own wired headphones with a traditional jack for use with their chromebooks.

Clinical Corner

It is often said that communication is the key to a strong relationship.  When I came across this article in the Wall Street Journal titled, “How to Become a “Supercommunicator”, I thought it would be worth sharing.  The article discusses “supercommunicators”- “people capable of saying exactly the right thing, breaking through to almost anyone, figuring out how to connect in even the most unlikely circumstances.” While we might know people who this comes easy to, a lot of us have to work at this. The good news is there are definitely skills you can practice to improve.  The earlier our students/children learn these skills it seems that their relationships might just be easier…and maybe we can try to model well for them in the meantime.

The author Charles Duhigg mentions that there are three types of conversations:  practical, emotional and social and that we have to try to match the type of conversation our companion is having in order to connect,  Our brain craves connections so that is why it feels so good when we feel like we “click” with someone.  So here are some of the tips he had to offer:

  • Ask deep questions, such as going further such as trying to find the “why” of the reason they might like to go into the field of their choice after high school.

  • Prove you are listening.  Ask a question about what you have heard and then rephrase it and ask if you “got it right”.  It might seem like more work in the beginning but it really helps the person feel heard.

  •  Determine what everyone wants.  Duhigg states that it’s important to remember that what the other person might want out of the conversation is important too.

  • Pay attention to more than just words.  Don’t ignore body language, sighs or laughs.

Lastly, he states, “Underlying this science is a big idea:  Communication is a learnable skill.  There are moments when a curious question, a silent laugh or an empathetic expression can carve a new path.  We can all learn how to hear what’s unsaid and speak so others want to listen.  Because the right conversation, at the right moment, can change everything.”
