CAMPUS STORE CAMP '23:    Students will be engaged in Hound Pound Set Up.  Students will get a free camp shirt and snacks.

Clinical Corner: Throughout this school year I have given examples of mindfulness with the breath.  “Focusing on our bodily sensations helps anchor us to the present moment.  Since we always have our breath with us, it is something we can always use as a focusing point,”  states the authors of DBT Skills in Schools, Mazza, Dexter-Mazza, Miller, Rathus, and Murphy, 2016, p.93.  DBT, or dialectical behavior therapy helps people find ways to accept themselves, feel safe, and tolerate their emotions to help regulate potentially destructive or harmful behaviors.  This breathing technique can help calm you so you don’t act impulsively and also helps relieve anxiety.  Here’s how it works:  For one to two minutes, and with a “soft gaze”(looking down at nothing in particular), count 1 on the in-breath, then 2 on the out-breath, 3 on the in-breath and 4 on the out-breath, all the way to 10.  When you get to 10, stop and begin counting at 1 again.  If you lose count, just notice it and begin back at 1.  If you notice that all of a sudden you are at 11, 18 or 24, just notice it, let it go and begin back at 1 again.  If you notice your thoughts are drifting away from your breathing, just notice it and gently bring your attention back to your breath and counting.

It’s almost just as important to notice when we are distracted as it is to stay focused on counting the breath.  This way we strengthen that observer muscle that can help bring ourselves back to the task at hand whether it be at school, home or at work. Even if you only have time to breathe and count to 10 one time, you should feel calmer, more centered and like you just hit a pause button in your day, which is what we all need sometimes.

GSA Pride Day

GSA and No Place for Hate will be holding a Pride Day on Thursday, June 1st. Students and staff are welcome to wear purple or rainbow the day of to support the LGBTQ+ community. During the lunches, GSA and NPFH will be tabling outside of the media center with an informational tri fold on Stonewall, definitions from the community, and what the colors of the pride flag mean. Rainbow ribbon pins and pride origami hearts will be available from the table. Students are also welcome to come write appropriate uplifting messages on pieces of paper that can be taken by other students for a positive message for their day.

No Place For Hate

The month of May honors Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. The following video was created by No Place for Hate and will be placed in students’ grade level Google Classrooms. Interested students can view the video at their leisure.AAPI Month Video NBHS 2023

No Place For Hate will be collecting donations to create hygiene kits and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for a woman's organization. We will be collecting donations until Thursday, June 1st in Room 115. Check out the flyer to see the supplies we will be collecting. We will then be hosting a Service Event after school on Tuesday, June 6th to create the kits and sandwiches. Thank you for your help in supporting an important mission.

Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month from No Place For Hate! May is a celebration of the contributions and culture that these groups have brought to the United States. The month of May was chosen to commemorate the immigration of the first Japanese people to the United States in 1843 and to mark the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.

NJSLA Make-Up Testing Dates

Please excuse the miscommunication about NJSLA Grade 9 Makeup testing dates.  The state window for make-up testing for the NJSLA Grade 9 Math and ELA and the Grade 11 Science is May 30-June 2. Math will be given on May 31, ELA will be given June 1 and Science will be given on June 2.  Any student who missed the original testing dates will be given a pass in homeroom the day prior to the make up session.  Students will miss instructional time in order to complete the assessment. All students are expected to be on time for the testing session and bring their fully charged school-issued Chromebook to school.  Any questions or concerns about NJSLA testing can be directed to the Office of Academics.

Lost & Found

We have a significant Lost & Found collection near the main cafeteria. If your children can’t find a water bottle, article of clothing or lunch box - please have them stop by to see if their missing item is on the table in the main cafe. Unclaimed items will be removed on June 12th.

A Message From Your Northern Nurses

The US COVID public health emergency has been lifted and that means beginning in 2024 a shift away from federal funds for free COVID testing and vaccines, instead those costs will be handled through private insurance.

Our school guidelines, with regard to infection control and preventing illness in school, have not changed.

Please continue to keep students home for any sick symptoms.

Please continue to report any positive COVID infections and Flu infections to your school nurse.

Nursing will work with you and Administration to ensure that students home sick have excused absences.

While COVID infection incidence is low, boosters are still reformulated for variants and recommended.

The Burlington County Health Department has announced their next round of immunization clinics.  Please see the information HERE for times and location.

Make sure if you are receiving mail from your Health Insurance program that you are promptly responding so you do not have a loss of health insurance coverage

Contact our school nurse with any questions,mcrane@nburlington.com gnocon@nburlington.com

As we head into Memorial Day weekend, we'd like to say how thankful we are to those who gave their lives while serving.

And we’re thinking of those who have lost someone they love.

Thank you for your sacrifice.
