Middle School Parent Message

Here are the updates from the middle school:
Holiday Wishes
We are off from school next week for Winter Break. From all of us here at Northern Burlington, best wishes for a safe and happy holiday. We look forward to working with your children in the New Year.
School Store Holiday Season Hours: Thank you to all who came out to do holiday shopping at the school store. While the time for holiday shopping is over, online purchases can be made in the New Year, just visit this LINK.
Sneaker Donations: NB Athletic Trainers are collecting sneakers for a recycling program called GotSneakers. They will take SNEAKERS ONLY but in ANY CONDITION, any size. Collection bins are outside of both gym offices. Please help us reach our goal of 500 pairs by January 6!
High School Program of Studies: The 2023-2024 High School Program of Studies is now available on the HS Counseling website Course selection in the high school for 2023-2024 begins in January.

Winter Sports and Spectators: The middle school winter sport seasons are underway. While we appreciate the fact that there are students who want to show support for their classmates on the athletic teams, we are not equipped to provide supervision to students after school. For those students who would like to attend a sporting event as a spectator, they must first go home and then return accompanied by a responsible adult who remains with them and provides transportation home.

If you already have an account, there is no need to create a new one. Log in with your username and password to register your child for the 2023 Spring Sport Season.
Please be sure that all current physicals are uploaded into the registration portal (STEP 4).

Clinical Corner: Have you ever had a feeling you were afraid would last forever? Thank goodness it's impossible for that to happen. Dr. Jill Taylor explains: “Something happens in the external world and chemicals are flushed through your body which puts it at full alert. For those chemicals to totally flush out of the body, it takes less than 90 seconds. She goes on to say, “Feelings are like ocean waves-they rise, crest and recede all day long. Dr. Taylor’s research shows that the entire “wave” process takes 90 seconds if you identify, label, and accept your emotion. This last step involves allowing the feeling to exist without trying to shove it down or deny it, or conversely, magnify it or make it a big deal. Simply observe it.”
Using words like “ I am getting angry” makes it easier for your brain to understand what is going on and calms it. The trick is to allow the feeling to ride out and then think about something different or apply a coping strategy like going for a walk. This way you avoid activating the fight or flight process all over again. Click here to read the full article, 90 Seconds to Emotional Resilience. This 90 second rule is a great tool to share with your kids or students. It gives one hope that indeed “this too shall pass”.
A Message from your Northern Nurses: Following data from the Burlington County Health Department, trends show we may expect an increase in the number of Flu, COVID and all respiratory infections after the holiday season.
Please do your part by carefully monitoring your student and keeping him/her home for any sick symptoms.
Worrisome symptoms are cough, fever, breathing difficulty AND 2 or more symptoms combined such as congestion, headache, sore throat, muscle aches etc.
Please do not send students with sick symptoms to school and either:
Take to your doctor for clearance OR
Use a home COVID test (ideally 1 negative test and a second 48 hours later)
AND - Please communicate with your student's school nurse.
We must track the number of COVID and Flu cases in our community and we will work with you and Administration to ensure students home sick have excused absences.

Burlington County began offering both the single COVID-19 test as well as a combined COVID-19/Flu test at the testing site at Willingboro Towne Center, 4390 Rt 130 North, Willingboro, as of December 12, 2022. Test results are generally back within 48 hours. Insurance information is collected, but people without insurance are still eligible for testing.

Relay for Life: From May 20th at 6:00 p.m. to May 21st at 6:00 a.m. we will gather on the football field to raise money and awareness for the American Cancer Society! The night is spent celebrating survivors, supporting cancer patients, and remembering friends and family. There are also events and games all night long, and you can spend the night hanging out with your friends and family. All are welcome!!!!
We have had several meetings so far and have selected the theme of “Countries - United for a Cure”. We are also on our way to reaching our goal of $10,000 by December 31, 2022. We are currently at $9,684.55! If each team of our current teams is able to raise $18, we will reach our goal!
The Taco Bell in Wrightstown is helping Northern’s Relay for Life fundraising. They will provide us with 50% of their proceeds (mention NB Relay for Life) on January 11th from 4 - 8 pm. Join us and help to make the 2023 Relay for Life of Northern Burlington the best yet!
Our next organization/information meeting will be January 11th in room 110 of the High School at 5:30pm. Additional meetings are:

Reminders:
Student Pickup: In the event that a student must leave school before the conclusion of the school day they may only be picked up by a person that is listed in PowerSchool as a parent, guardian or emergency contact. All persons will need to present picture identification prior to the release of a student. Any changes to this information must be completed in writing prior to the day of implementation.
School Closure/Delayed Opening due to Inclement Weather: In the event that school must be closed or the opening delayed by 90 minutes due to inclement weather, announcements will be broadcast via twitter and posted on our website www.nburlington.com.
