Middle School Parent Message

Good Afternoon,

Here are the updates from the middle school:

Extended Learning Schedule:  In case you missed it, here is a message that went out on Thursday regarding our district piloting a new schedule for the coming school year:

Dear Parent/Guardians,

I hope this message finds you well.  Northern Burlington is exploring a new schedule that will take effect in September of 2023.  To help us gather feedback about the proposed schedule, we will be implementing practice days in December and March.  The December days will take place on Thursday the 1st and Friday the 2nd.  Below is some information that will help explain why we are looking to make the change and what the schedule will look like.

Video

This video explains the reasons for the schedule change, the benefits of the extended learning schedule, and some of the logistics of this phase of the implementation process.

The schedule includes a designated Homeroom or Advisory period, 4 classes per day (78 minutes each), and a lunch/opportunity period (80 minutes in total).

Class Schedule for Thursday, December 1st, “A” Day

The first four periods of students’ current schedules will meet on Thursday, December 1st, “A” Day.

Class Schedule for Friday, December 2nd, “B” Day

The second four periods of students’ current schedules will meet on Friday, December 2nd, “B” Day.

Lunch and Opportunity Period Assignments

Students’ assigned locations will be shared via the Google Classroom for their Grade level.

  • Students in Grades 8, 11 and 12 will be assigned to Lunch 1.

  • At the same time students in Grades 7, 9 and 10 will be assigned to Opportunity period 1.

  • Students in Grades 7, 9, and 10 will be assigned to Lunch 2.

  • At the same time students in Grades 8, 11 and 12 will be assigned to Opportunity period 2.

Lunch selections and locations

During the two trial days, the number of lunch offerings may be reduced to facilitate service. Locations will be clearly labeled with selections for these days. In order to expedite service for all students, it is extremely important for students to have their School IDs available at the point of sale.

Opportunity Period

Opportunity period will provide students with time in the day to receive additional instruction or support, work on assignments and complete make-up work. At times, clubs, activity groups and organizations will have time to meet during the day.  For the practice days, all students will be assigned to a location for the Opportunity Period.  At the High School, clubs and activity meetings will be shared with the students ahead of time.  Middle School students will have additional time with their teachers during the opportunity period.

FAQs and Additional Questions

Please visit the district website at www.nburlington.com to view the frequently asked questions page and have an opportunity to submit any questions you may have.

Parent Conferences:  Thank you to all who were able to join us in person or virtually for conferences.  We hope you found the time helpful to support your child’s academic progress.

In the event you were not able to attend conferences, we encourage you to reach out directly to your child’s teacher and/or the appropriate school counselor if you have any questions.

School Pictures:  Student pictures were sent home with students on Monday, November 14.  Retakes/Make-up pictures are scheduled for Wednesday, November 23.  Parents who would like their child’s picture retaken should have their student come to the main office prior to November 23 to be added to the photo schedule for November 23.  Students will need to return the photo packet from the first sitting.

Food Drive:  The middle school will be working with the Food Bank of South Jersey to sponsor a food drive the week of December 12.  Look for information on the donations as we approach that date.

Federal Impact Aid Survey:  We continue to collect Federal Impact Aid Surveys.  If you have not submitted the form on behalf of your child, please anticipate that we will contact you or your student.  This is an important source of our school’s funding.  We appreciate your support in this regard.

Influenza:  Here is a writeup about an illness other than COVID.  Good old fashioned flu season is upon us.  Our school nurses provided the following information on the flu as well as a link to find a vaccine location nearest to you:

  • Flu Season is underway and flu activity is increasing across the country.

  • Now is a good time to get a flu vaccine.

  • Higher risk of Flu complications:  <5 years, >65 years, underlying health conditions (asthma, diabetes, or other chronic health diseases)

  • Please see link below to find a local place for a Flu vaccine

PTSC News: Check our website (www.nburlington.com/page/ptsc) for more information.

COVID: As a reminder,  students who are ill should stay home.

For those students who have symptoms that might indicate the potential of COVID, they will need to be tested before returning to school.  COVID Testing can be done in a Doctor’s office, community testing site or an at-home test with results provided to the School Nurse.  If negative, students may return when feeling well and symptoms free. In cases where students do test positive for COVID, they will need to remain home for a minimum of five days. Students who test positive for COVID and return to school after five days are strongly recommended to wear a well fitting mask around others through the tenth day.  Please contact our school nurse with any questions, tpugliese@nburlington.com.

Winter Sports:  Middle school winter sports began tryouts last week.  Submission of sports participation packets at this point will, in all likelihood, not be cleared to play in time to participate in tryouts and these  students will not make the team.

Middle School Drama:  Mark Your Calendars for  The Aliens Are Coming!  The Aliens Are Coming! by Tim Kelly

The owners of The Meteorite Inn, Doug and his sister, Peggy, decide to capitalize on the fact that they’re close to a restricted zone known only as ’Area 502.’ (Rumor has it the government keeps an alien prisoner housed there!)  The hotel’s dining room specialty becomes ’Marsburgers’ and they rent out the conference room to Hyacinth Muggleworth, a rather eccentric lady who’s holding a UFO convention. The Meteorite Inn overflows with excited UFO believers and speakers who claim they’ve been abducted by aliens and held prisoner in spaceships!  Sheriff Chickamauga tries to figure things out as he munches on a doughnut.  Is that an alien starship hovering overhead? With its hilarious action and funny dialogue, this play is out of this world!  You could even say it’s X-cellent!

The performances will be on December 9 and 10 at the middle school.   Tickets will be sold at the door starting at 6:30 pm.  The curtain rises at 7:30 pm.  Adult tickets are $8 and $5 for Students/Seniors with ID.  Tickets are cash only.  We hope to see you there!
