The week of February 9 is our annual Blue-Grey Competition. Our students are divided into a Blue Team (last names begin with the letter A- L) and the Grey Team (last names begin with the letter M - Z). Students earn points for their team based on participation in school wide competitions as well as class based competitions. We have a Blue Grey Games event scheduled for Friday, February 13 at the end of the day. Our students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of fun competitions to support their team.
The different dress themes for each day are in the picture. Of course, participation is optional, but we look forward to the students showing their school spirit.
Part of the competition is the collection of aluminum can pull tabs. The collection will benefit a charity. Tabs from home are welcome and we will be collecting them during lunches. The team that collects the most tabs, based on weight, will be the winner of that competition.
We look forward to a fun week where we combine our usual academic pursuits with the competition between the two teams! | | As part of our fundraising efforts this year we are pleased to offer Gertrude Hawk Chocolates! You will be able to support our sale in two ways: by creating a fundraiser account for your child and sharing the information with friends and family to purchase chocolate online and by collecting orders in person by completing the order form that will be sent home with your child on Monday, February 2. Online orders can be placed through March 22 and friends and family can have the orders sent directly to their homes. Physical order forms and payment are due on Monday, February 23 and orders will be delivered to the school during the week of March 23. See this flyer for more information. | | The time after the holidays can often seem to drag on until spring sometimes bringing with it Seasonal affective disorder for some. An article by The American Psychiatric Association describes Seasonal affective disorder(also known as SAD) as a form of depression and can also be called Winter depression or officially, as in the DSM-5 it is Major Depression with Seasonal Pattern. It is more common in women than in men and affects about five percent of the adults in the U.S. The article reports that January and February tend to be the most difficult months for people with SAD in the U.S. Interestingly, it can also occur, although not as often, in the summer months as well. Some symptoms to be on the lookout for are: Sad or depressed mood Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed Change in sleep, usually more than usual. Loss of energy/increased fatigue Difficulty concentrating/making decisions Feeling worthless or guilty One therapeutic treatment for SAD is light therapy, which involves sitting in front of a light therapy box that emits a very bright light for about 20 minutes a day. Some people start this therapy in early fall, in anticipation of symptoms returning or worsening in the winter. Just like in the treatment of major depression, making an effort to care for yourself with good nutrition, regular sleep and exercise as well as socializing to stay connected to others should all help. And of course seeing a therapist to talk about things rounds out the treatment. If you or someone you are close with struggle at this time of the year, this article is a good place to start so one doesn’t have to suffer all winter long. | | Spring athletic registration is now open.
