Nominations are accepted until Monday, November 3, 2025 | | Recently, I have been reading the book The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins. The author brings so many good points into focus that I thought it would be helpful to anyone. She can undoubtedly explain the theory better than I can here, on Youtube and TED talks and I encourage you to look those up, but I am going to do my best. In the first chapter she defines the Let Them Theory as this: “The Let Them Theory is about freedom. Two simple words-Let Them-will free you from the burden of trying to manage other people. When you stop obsessing over what other people think, say, or do, you finally have the energy to focus on your own life. You stop reacting and start living.” Robbins also explains that it goes one important step further, that after you say Let Them, you need to say Let Me, which is where you take responsibility for what you do next. Because by using this theory you are not reacting as much, you can intentionally decide how you want to handle each situation. She does report that the book focuses on adult relationships of all kinds, and she uses anecdotes that help demonstrate how to use the theory in our relationships, even the ones with our kids although there are differences. Before this gets too long, I will end with what she says about this: “But as a parent, I’ll admit there are times my kids drive me crazy. When I lose my cool, I make bad choices as a parent. So the Let Them Theory has been very helpful in teaching me how to stay calm, confident, and grounded when situations with my kids feel overwhelming. Every time I say Let Them, I am acknowledging that my kids are capable, and stronger than I think. The Let Me part reminds me that my job is in supporting, listening and guiding, not controlling. That said, I am still the parent, so there is a balance between trusting, letting them and providing the support they need and stepping in when necessary.” She does provide a special section in the Appendix that is specifically for strengthening your bond with your teens/young adults and using the theory. | | Winter Athletic Registration is now being accepted for Winter 2025-26.
