We're holding a brief but important community meeting to discuss the results from our recent ThoughtExchange and collaboratively begin crafting a new mission statement for Northern Burlington. Your voice is invaluable in shaping the future of our students' experience. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 14th at 6:00 PM in the Middle School Media Center, conveniently scheduled just before the middle school choral concert. We encourage you to attend this engaging discussion and then stay to enjoy the wonderful musical talents of our students! For those unable to attend, a copy of the presentation will be available after the meeting on May 22nd, prior to the high school band concert. | | Next week is Teacher Appreciation Week. We acknowledge all that they do for our students throughout the school year.
During the week, we will have “teacher-grams” available in the main office for our students. Students can stop by to pick them up to complete and give to their teachers (or drop them off in the main office and we will make sure they are delivered).
Thank you to our teachers for their work and support for our students. | | This past week, the eighth graders completed the NJSLA science test. We appreciate their hard work and flexibility as they sat for a test Tuesday through Friday and then we ran an alternate schedule each day.
Both of the seventh and eighth graders will be sitting for the math and English Language Arts NJSLA tests the week of May 19. As we approach that week, students should be prepared for each day by getting a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast, and a fully charged chromebook for each day of the testing. | | The Eighth Grade Class Night is scheduled for Friday, June 6 from 6pm- 8pm at the Middle School. This is a picnic event that includes food, music, and outdoor games, and dress is casual. The event is open only to Northern Burlington 8th graders and tickets will be sold in advance only. Tickets are $20 per person (or 20 3R tickets) and will be on sale in the Media Center during lunch May 13-22 (no sales Thursday, May 15), with special Early Bird pricing of $15 (or 15 3R tickets) May 13,14, and 16. The classes they have chosen are viewable on Powerschool. If you have any questions, please reach out to their counselor, Mrs. Irwin (zirwin@nburlington.com).
*Please note that if your child selected JROTC as one of their electives: The middle school and high school are not on the same schedules, therefore they will take a high school bus and begin school in the high school every other day. They will have a double PE period on the opposite days in the middle school. A schedule change after the year has started is not possible because of the double period. The high school counseling team has also met with all rising 9th graders to finalize course requests for the 2025-2026. Please log into PowerSchool to review all course requests. All changes to course requests will be honored prior to May 1, 2025, at 2:30pm. If the change requires a course waiver, a signed COURSE WAIVER FORM must be submitted by May 1, 2025 at 2:30pm. All requests to make changes to course requests submitted after May 1, 2025, will not be reviewed until after the master schedule has been finalized. At that time all efforts will be made to accommodate the changes but it is not guaranteed. Please contact our HIGH SCHOOL COUNSELING TEAM via email to make any changes. | | | | The high school has begun construction work on the auditorium. There may be construction traffic that interferes with the regular traffic flow. Please plan accordingly and be sure to allot extra time to arrive at school for parents who are dropping their children off to school. | | The Northern Burlington Band Booster Club is hosting a bag bingo on May 3 at 5 pm, at the middle school. If you are interested, please see this FLIER for more information. | | The Northern Burlington Golf Team is having a team fundraiser at Chickie and Pete's on Monday, May 5th, 2025. Please see the attached flier for more information. | | In an Oprah Daily article Samantha Vincenty writes about how it’s in the chaotic moments of our lives that we need inner peace the most. She lists 10 Micro-Practices from different practitioners for finding calm in chaos. Here are a few but for all ten click here.
Since your breath is always with you, breathe using the 4-7-8 breath, which is a time tested yoga technique. Inhale through your nose for a count of 4, hold that breath for a count of 7 and slowly exhale it out for a count of 8. The longer exhale helps stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, which stimulates the relaxation response in your body.
Recognize and acknowledge the emotion you are experiencing. Naming the emotion helps de-escalate its intensity.
ACT your way to deeper self-compassion- Use the three step method called ACT-A is to acknowledge your struggle, and say, this is really hard. C is for connect, connecting to the fact that how you are feeling is part of the human experience, knowing that other people get frustrated, angry, overwhelmed etc. and the T is to talk kindly to yourself, especially in the third person because doing so activates the care circuit in your brain so you feel more cared for. So you might say, Laura, you are going to be ok, and you are not alone in this.
Practice acceptance. She writes that when we resist our circumstances we create a lot of suffering, which is the opposite of inner peace. But when you align yourself with what is, you flow with, rather than against what is happening. She says that is why it is called “practice” because it might take a few or a lot of tries to be successful at it. You might say to yourself something like this,”This is where I am. I’m just going to flow with this…It’s ok and I’m ok.” | | |
