Clinical Corner:The time after the holidays can often seem to drag on until spring sometimes bringing with it Seasonal affective disorder for some. An article by The American Psychiatric Association describes Seasonal affective disorder(also known as SAD) as a form of depression and can also be called Winter depression or officially, as in the DSM-5 it is Major Depression with Seasonal Pattern.  It is more common in women than in men and affects about five percent of the adults in the U.S.  The article reports that January and February tend to be the most difficult months for people with SAD in the U.S.  Interestingly, it can also occur, although not as often, in the summer months as well.

Some symptoms to be on the lookout for are:

  • Sad or depressed mood

  • Loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed

  • Change in sleep, usually more than usual.

  • Loss of energy/increased fatigue

  • Difficulty concentrating/making decisions

  • Feeling worthless or guilty

One therapeutic treatment for SAD is light therapy, which involves sitting in front of a light therapy box that emits a very bright light for about 20 minutes a day. Some people start this therapy in early fall, in anticipation of symptoms returning or worsening in the winter.  Just like in the treatment of major depression, making an effort to care for yourself with good nutrition, regular sleep and exercise as well as socializing to stay connected to others should all help.  And of course seeing a therapist to talk about things rounds out the treatment.   If you or someone you are close with struggle at this time of the year, this article is a good place to start so one doesn’t have to suffer all winter long.

Winter Sports Spectators:  The winter sports season has begun.  While we appreciate our students wanting to come out and support their classmates, we are not equipped to provide supervision to student spectators.  As a result, students who wish to watch a basketball game or wrestling match must first go home and then return with a responsible adult who will stay with them for the duration of the contest and then provide a ride home.

Bus Drivers Needed:  Please see this FLIER from our transportation office.  The district is looking for full and part time bus drivers.  The job includes free training to earn CDL, as well as flexible hours.  Feel free to share this flier with others who may be interested.

Have a good weekend!
