In-depth, thought-provoking, Socratic-style post viewing discussions will be the norm. Possible titles: Citizen Kane, Toy Story, Malcolm X, The Dark Knight, The Empire Strikes Back, Double Indemnity, The Wizard of Oz, and The Hate U Give

July 24-27

Making of a Mystery: Students will have opportunities to put their detective skills to the test in a variety of ways. Scavenger hunts, Escape rooms, Who Dunn’it stories, and Clue the board game. This enrichment experience allows students to strengthen both their critical thinking and problem solving skills, in a fun and creative way.

Digital Graphic Design:  Using their cell phones, a Chromebook, and a desktop PC, students will create a series of items in the high school Design Lab. Projects range from buttons, stickers, laser engraved items, and a printed T-Shirt.

Clinical Corner: For the last Clinical Corner before summer vacation I thought it would be helpful to have some techniques to manage thoughts because our thoughts can often cause us great distress. These strategies called Mindfulness of Current Thoughts, created by Marsha M. Linehan, creator of Dialectical Behavioral therapy and also author of many books and workbooks is known for these below and many more if you would like to explore her work further.

Here are some ways to just observe your thoughts:

  1. Acknowledge their presence( I am having a worry thought right now…)

  2. Do not judge or analyze your thoughts

  3. Imagine your thoughts are like waves coming and going or clouds that drift by

Here are some ways to be curious about your thoughts:

  1. Ask yourself, where does this thought come from?

  2. Notice how each thought that comes into your mind also goes out

Here are some ways to not block or suppress your thoughts:

  1. Play with your thoughts:  repeat them out loud over and over, as fast as you can, sing them, say them very slowly or in a different voice

  2. Try seeing all of your thoughts as neutral, not seeing any as good or bad but just as sensations of the brain

Try picking two or three strategies you think you might use or that would be useful to your child/student and applying them over the course of a week.  Hopefully they will stick and be something you and your student/teen can always use.

A Message from your Northern Nurses:  The US COVID public health emergency has been lifted and that means beginning in 2024 a shift away from federal funds for free COVID testing and vaccines, instead those costs will be handled through private insurance.

Our school guidelines, with regard to infection control and preventing illness in school, have not changed.

Please continue to keep students home for any sick symptoms.

Please continue to report any positive COVID infections and Flu infections to your school nurse.

Nursing will work with you and Administration to ensure that students home sick have excused absences.

While COVID infection incidence is low, boosters are still reformulated for variants and recommended.  The Burlington County Health Department has announced their next round of immunization clinics.  Please see the information HERE for times and location.

Make sure if you are receiving mail from your Health Insurance program that you are promptly responding so you do not have a loss of health insurance coverage

Contact our school nurse with any questions, tpugliese@nburlington.com.
